How Pearls are Cultured Inside Living Oysters
A pearl oyster can mean one of two things. 1: A mollusk that grows a pearl inside itself, either in the wild or in a farm where pearls are cultured inside living oysters. 2: A real oyster with a pearl inside given as a gift, traditionally in a can, and called a wish pearl or a love pearl.
An oyster can take 2-5 years to grow a 5-7 mm pearl. These are generally the size of pearl oyster in a can gifts, and the colours range from white or cream to peach or purple. Larger pearls can take even more years to cultivate, and as the pearl grows there are more chances of an irregularity forming, meaning that very large perfectly spherical pearls are rare and therefore of high value. Natural pearls can come in nearly every hue of the rainbow, with some colours being more highly prized than others.
Pearl oysters have been cultivated for years. Some countries traditionally collect young oysters from the wild using divers, and place them in ‘farms’ where they can be tended and monitored. Other countries have taken pearl oyster farming to a new level, breeding oysters in captivity and seeding them with natural or manmade irritants to make them produce pearls.
Pearls are made of a coating that a live oyster applies around a foreign object caught in its body. In many cases, wild oysters begin to manufacture pearls organically around a grain of sand. Layer upon layer is applied, and the pearl grows in size and lustre. One oyster can hold multiple pearls, although when this is the case all of them are usually small.
Many pearl farms have perfected the art harvesting pearls without damaging the oyster then reseeding and returning it to the farm to produce yet more pearls. When the pearl oyster stops producing, it may be used as meat.
A pearl oyster in a can is a live oyster still cultivating a pearl. It is a fun gift to give to a loved one as the mystery will be revealed – what colour will the pearl be? How big will it be? The excitement can be contagious. Love pearls can be collected and later strung and worn for good luck.
