These Akoya pearls were the first types of pearls to be cultured on a large scale process so that everyone could enjoy pearls, not just the super rich. Most Akoya pearl necklaces are in the six to seven millimeter range. The reason being is that most high quality Akoya pearls over eight millimeters are just so expensive. Most strands that are over eight millimeters are at least a few thousand dollars in a retail store. That is why six to seven millimeter strands are so much more popular. In one word affordability, is the main reason. Also, this seven millimeter size is still quite large and looks very nice on most women.

Of course when someone says Akoya pearls or sea pearls most people assume white. But while most Akoya pearls are white there are many different types of overtones as well. Pink overtones are generally more popular in America while green overtones are more popular in Asia and Europe. Why this is I’m not sure, but this is the general rule of thumb. Having seen many different strands of Akoya Pearl Necklace worn on many different women I can say that usually pink overtones of pearls look best of white skin. Green overtones on the other hand for white akoya pearls look best on asian or olive skin tones. Akoya pearls can be very expensive as mentioned earlier but especially if the pearls are nine millimeter or larger and well matched. If the surface is very clean and the luster is very high the strand can command a price of over $20,000 retail. If you can find this size of strand on the market you are lucky enough as most jewelry stores do not carry this size and quality of Akoya Pearls.
