The Uniqueness of Freshwater Pearl Necklace
Pure, and simplistic, a gift from nature and unlike any other gems, the freshwater pearl necklace holds a soft flame that reflects the clear sunlit lakes of its origin. Of all the types of pearls that exists, freshwater pearls are unique in their formation process. Hyriopsis cumingi (triangle shell) is the most widely used species in culturing freshwater pearls.
At the core of most pearls is the nucleus or seed that causes the pearl to form, but freshwater pearls do not require a foreign object or nucleus, instead, the freshwater mollusks form pearls from the fleshy mantle tissue usually from another host. This gives the freshwater pearl their unique quality that sometimes exceeds the quality of some akoya (saltwater pearls). Some akoya cultured pearls have unusually thin nacre, due to a combination of factors like natural conditions, the rush to meet demands, and the quest for higher profits. When farmers nucleate freshwater mussels with only mantle tissue, the resulting cultured pearls are pure nacre, through and through. Even if the mantle tissue is accompanied by a bead nucleus, at harvest the cultured pearl will have more nacre than most modern akoyas. So this a major distinction form other pearls such as South Sea, and Tahitian pearls.
A stunning freshwater pearl necklace, made up of uniform white pearls 7.5 mm in size and strung to a length of 18 inches, is truly classic. These near round pearls are perfectly matched and individually knotted on strong silk string. A customer favorite is the “Elegant Necklace” set which is most unusual and unique. The design of a wide criss-cross braided white-gold plated chain, with seven teardrop freshwater cultured pearls at intervals that dangle ever so slightly.
