Torsional Vibration of Powertrains $132.24 The recent introduction of stringent emission requirements together with economic pressure has led to a particular focus on increasing powertrain efficiency. This has seen the incorporation of realtime measurements to predict system behaviour and engine condition. Accurate models for all components are thus important. This work investigates the consequences of some common assumptions made in low frequency torsional powertrain models, and proposes improved models where appropriate. In particular, pistontocylinder friction, (crank/gudgeon) offset, and tyre torsional behaviour were studied. It was found that pistontocylinder friction can increase the inertia variation of an engine mechanism. Offset also modifies its nonlinear behaviour. For small (gudgeon) values these effects are minimal. However, for large (crank) values, the effects should not be ignored. The low frequency torsional damping properties of a small pneumatic tyre were found to be more accurately represented as hysteretic rather than viscous. Time Domain Receptance modelling was used to extend the results to a multicylinder engine powertrain. The findings should be of interest to both industry and academia alike. Vibrations in Flexible Rotor Systems with Friction $154.53 Selfsustained vibrations which can appear in mechanical systems often limit the performance of such systems or can even cause failure or damage to them. Although a lot of theoretical research has been done on vibrations in flexible rotor systems, a limited number of papers are available including experimental results on the interaction between different types of vibrations. Here, we address frictioninduced vibrations in flexible mechanical systems, lateral vibrations caused by massunbalance in rotor systems and the interaction between those two types of vibrations. Analysis of a setup, when both torsional and lateral vibrations are present, leads to the conclusion that frictioninduced torsional vibrations and torsional vibrations due to coupling between torsional and lateral dynamics may appear. Furthermore, if massunbalance is present in the system, the amplitude of frictioninduced vibrations and the region in which these vibrations occur, both decrease compared to the situation without massunbalance. Moreover, it is shown that if the massunbalance is large enough then torsional vibrations can disappear entirely.
