Unfettered views of the Srikhand Mahadev peak (5155mts) are reason enough to visit this beautiful place. Sarahan is apple-country at its prettiest, with miles of lush apple and peach orchards and terraced fields that intersperse slate roofed houses. Beautiful flowers and trees grow wild in the valley, flanked by forests of tall deodars and medicinal herbs. While in Sarahan, make a trip to the Kamru fort, Chitkul valley, Sangla valley; go angling in the Baspa river; or trek around Srikhand Mahadev, Ranwin or Bashal. Historically SpeakingThere are many legends that do the rounds regarding the history of Sarahan. The Rampur rajas of Bushahr, who once ruled Kinnaur, made Sarahan their intermediary summer capital when they left Kamru in the Sangla Valley and before Rampur Bushahr became the new capital.
ShoppingThere is not much scope for shopping in this small hamlet other than some interesting puja equipment for worship and trinkets of jewellery.
EventsDussehra is celebrated in a grand way at both the Bhimakali Temple and in the village of Sarahan, and villagers from around come in droves to take part in the celebrations. So while this is a festive time with animal sacrifice playing a big role in the festivities, it is crowded and the
animal slaying is definitely not for the faint hearted.
Night OutTry the restaurant at Srikhand hotel – they serve Chinese, Indian and Continental cuisine. The dhabas in the bazaar serve good simple fare which is wholesome and does not burn a hole in your pocket.

SightsThe Bhimakali Temple , reputed to be at least 800 years old, is dedicated to Goddess Durga or Bhimakali and is considered one of the significant Shakti Peeths of Shaivite Hindus. The temple is Tibetan in its architectural style, with Buddhist and Hindu influences and bronze statues of both
religions in the shrines. It has slanted slate roofs, golden towers, pagodas and a carved silver door among a host of wooden beams and intricate carvings. While in Sarahan, make a trip to the Kamru fort, Chitkul valley and Sangla valley .
How to get there by AirThe airport closest to Sarahan is Jubbarhatti in Shimla. From Shimla, Sarahan is located at a distance of 175-kms and this distance can be covered by bus or one can hire a private taxi to go to Sarahan.
How to get there by RailShimla is the nearest railhead. From Shimla, taxis or jeeps can be hired and a bus service is also available to make the 6-hour journey to Sarahan.
How to get there by BusOne can drive to Sarahan via Shimla. Sarahan is a 6 hour drive from Shimla and the route to follow is NH – 22 upto Jeori, from where the road branches off towards Sarahan.
Best time to VisitThe months of March to June and September to October are delightful in Sarahan. Summer is cool, but daytime temperatures can go up to 32ºC, while the winter is chilly with snow.

Nearby PlacesJeori is a little hamlet that lies north of Saharan. Take the NH 22 and drive around 20kms to reach this pretty village. People particularly visit it for the Hot water Springs that are present there and are believed to have medicinal powers. Bhabha valley lies 50 km from
Sarahan – this scenic valley extends along the Bhaba river. Follow Link road to valley originates at Wangtu. It has a beautiful landscape, reservoir lake, alpine meadows and is best famous for trek route to Pin Valley in Spiti. Sangla Valley casts a spell and ensnares the visitor in her mesh. The scenic beauty of the surrounding apple orchards, flower filled meadows and towering mountains is unparalleled. Kamru Fort lies at a distance of 2 km from Sangla and warrants a visit. The architecture of the fort is reminiscent of the Bhimkali temple complex in Sarahan. Chitkul is the last village of the Sangla valley and the area is renowned for its saffron farms and the Baspa rivers rushing waters is an excellent place for trout fishing.

Gobioides broussonetti Dragon Fish $5.99 Dragon Fish, or Violet Gobies, are odd fish that are native to coastal brackish marine estuaries of the western Atlantic coast from the Carolinas to Brazil. In captivity, they seem to thrive the best in brackish water. They are characterized by a long, silver-violet eel-like body, with dorsal and ventral fins that extend all the way to the tail. They have tiny eyes and a large mouth in which their sharp teeth can be clearly seen. Despite their predatory appearance, Dragon Fish are not big predators. They have poor eyesight, and do little hunting. Dragon Fish often feed by scooping mouthfuls of sand or mud, swallowing edible items, and spitting out the rest. Their natural diet consists mainly of diatoms, worms, and small crustaceans. In the aquarium, they will accept live and frozen blackworms, bloodworms, brine shrimp, ghost shrimp, krill, as well as sinking pellets and occasionally, tiny guppies. Due to their poor eyesight, Dragon Fish are often slow to find food, and do not get enough to eat before other fish consume all the food. Be sure that your Dragon Fish gets plenty to eat, or it may starve to death. Dragon Fish should be kept singly unless a large group can be kept in a tank of about 100 gallons or more. In small tanks and small groups, one larger Dragon Fish will dominate the others and some may be bullied or not get enough food. Dragon Fish can be kept with most peaceful fish that are too large to swallow. |
