Question for black women on natural hair?

Hello!
First I would like to say that I am bi-racial (black and white). I’m 19 and used to relax my hair but haven’t for about 5 years now. Even more recently (as in the last 4-5 months) I have decided that I really don’t even want to straighten my hair except for maybe a few times a year. I have really been embracing my natural hair and I L O V E it!

Anyway, I’m wanting to really grow my hair out as much as I can. I want to see how long it can get. I normally cut it, but now I want to limit it to regular trims. I have been told before that twisting and braiding help hair grow. I’ve put two strand twists in my hair for the first time yesterday. Im wondering if I am going about everything the right way?

If I keep twisting it, and trimming it the way I should and stay away from anything damaging, will I see growth? What other things should I be aware of?

Twists and braids are all protective styles that are used to prevent breakage. When you hair doesn’t break as fast as it grows it gets longer. What protective styles do is keep your ends “protected.” People who twist or braid their hair natural hair usually leave the twists in for a month or at least two weeks, and rock a twist or braid out for a week afterward. Protective styling is meant to protect your hair from manipulation i.e combing, brushing, flat ironing or curling. I wouldn’t twist my hair too often because you might cause unneeded breakage. P.S. Trimming doesn’t make your hair grow its a myth. Hair grows from the scalp not the ends. I would suggest trimming every couple of months, (4-5) depending on the condition of your hair.
