Know What to Look for and Test When Buying Real Pearl Jewelry
Pearls have been a time-honored classic for centuries. Necklaces, bracelets, and even pearl jewelry earrings can make quite an impression on your significant other. Pearls are not easy to purchase.
Unlike most gemstones that you can see through and judge for color and clarity, pearls are just the opposite – opaque. People who frequently shop for pearls know a good pearl by its luster; that is, the amount of depth the pearl appears to have when looking at its surface. Good pearl jewelry is judged by how well the pearls are color and size-matched, and how flawless they are. But when you walk into a store to buy jewelry, how do you know whether you’re looking at real pearls or not.
Luster is the defining characteristic of a good pearl. A pearl is built by an oyster using layers of nacre. The more layers, the more depth and luster the pearl will have. A real pearl will show very slight variations in color when rolled under a bright light, which is an indication that the nacre was laid on heavier in some places than others. If the pearls have an even color and depth, move on. You can also look at the surface with a magnifier. If the surface isn’t bumpy or have some craters, they’re definitely fake. Anything made organically will have some amount of imperfection to it, even if you can’t see it with the naked eye.
Pearls come in many more colors than just white, so you can’t use color to tell if you are buying real pearl jewelry. Pearls come in all colors, from white and cream, to pink, green, gray, and even black. A jeweler can run tests on the pearls to tell if they are real, but don’t buy them and then ask for them to be tested. The best test of all is the price. On the open market, a pearl necklace made of equally-sized pearls of the same color, and all with a wondrous luster, will cost upwards of $1000. Maybe more, depending on the size of the pearls. If you come across a pearl jewelry necklace that has perfectly matched round, large, and lustrous pearls and it has a price tag of $100, it may be pretty, but it’s not genuine.
Fake pearls have their place in society too, and it’s okay to own some, as long as you know they’re fake. But nothing looks, feels, and shimmers like real pearls, and women instinctively know the difference between fake and real. A perfect piece of pearl jewelry is an investment, and it must be taken care of. Know what to look for when you shop for pearls, and then revel in the way they look on your favorite lady.
