Twisting around to return a serve?
My coach always told me you should move so that you can square your shoulders and pass a ball. But I was watching an old varsity, division I high school championship game and many of the players in the back row would twist around to return the serves instead if moving so that they’re in a better position. Their passes were all great passes though. Which is right?
I’ve been taught to face where the ball is coming from, and then point your platform (arms) in the direction that the ball should go. Sometimes you’ve got to make adjustments because the ball direction changes (like taking a step back so you’ll get the angle right).
Look at these pictures that I found of some passers in volleyball digging balls. I’m a tall middle blocker, so I don’t have much experience of passing, but I’m just letting you know of what my coaches have told me 
So no, don’t twist around.. you may have to angle your shoulders or move one foot back, but it shouldn’t be a twisting motion.
