Is there different types of pearls or are the traditional round pearls the only type?
just curious because i have some necklaces but im not sure if they are pearls because they are not
There are many types and shapes of pearls available!
There are imitation and simulated pearls which are beads made to look like pearls – they can be plastic or glass or even shell that is coated with a pearl-like finish. These are usually round in shape although different shapes are now appearing on the market.
In ‘real’ pearls these are the types most commonly found:
+ natural pearls – found randomly in oysters in the sea, they can be any shape – round, oval, button, etc., and when they’re really funky shapes they’re called a baroque shape. Natural pearls are quite rare.
+ cultured pearls – these are grown around a nucleus that has been inserted into the oyster by man. These can also come in any shape but round is often the most highly prized.
+ freshwater pearls – found randomly in mussels in freshwater lakes – any shape including a ‘petal’ shape, often known as keshi pearls.
+ freshwater cultured pearls – grown around a nucleus inserted into the mussel by man. These can come in any shape and have recently been grown around specific shapes like discs, hearts, diamonds, squares, rectangles, sticks and so on.
+ blister pearls – these happen in freshwater mussels and saltwater oysters – the nucleus becomes attached to the shell and is coated there. When farmed it is cut off the inside of the shell.
