A guide to natural, cultured and synthetic pearls

Pearls are a gemstone, which most people will know for their elegance and an item of jewellery worn to add sophistication to an outfit for any occasion. They are one of the oldest known gems and there are many verities some real and some not. The three main types talked about today are natural, cultured and synthetic. You also have Tahitian.

 

A natural pearl is the most valuable and prized off them all. This is when mother nature will do all the work and has no helping hand from a human. It’s all first started when a foreign object enters a shinny-shelled mollusk such as an Oyster. This foreign object then irritates the mollusk and in self-defence to protect itself starts to cover the intruder in layers of nacre. This is the same nacre that a shinny shelled mollusk will use to make it’s own shell. Over a couple of years this process produces a pearl. The natural variety is highly sought after today and considered very valuable.

 

The cultured variety is the most popular in everyday jewellery today and most of these will be known as freshwater cultured pearls. Formed in the same way as a natural pearl with the only difference being the forgein object is placed into the mollusc by a human hand. The cultured variety have a good quality shape and lustre today as over the years cultured pearl farms have been able to choose the type of mollusc which produces the best pearls. Grown in the USA and China these can take up to five to six years to grow to a larger size. This has made these beautiful gems affordable to most where natural pearls are out of reach.

 

The synthetic variety is as the name suggests; these are man made by machine. They will never have the same lustre and shine as a natural or cultured pearl.

 

Available in a range of colours from cream which most will associated with these gems to light pinks, grey and black. The value is based upon many factors including the surface clarity, the shape, lustre of the surface along with the size and orient. Measured in size by their diameter in millimetres unlike all other gemstones, which are measured in carat weight. A pearl with a diameter of 8mm should be more valuable than one of 4mm on condition the shape and lustre is good. This is mainly due the time taken to grow a 8mm pearl is considerably longer.

 

In brief, shapes can be varied from round and near round, oval, button shaped that are more popular with bracelets, a drop shape making a beautiful pendant and the baroque shape, which are unique and irregular in shape and found in sterling silver jewellery.   

 

When storing these little gems we recommend keeping them in a jewellery box away from long periods of sun and make sure you put any perfume on before your pearls as they are sensitive to heat and chemicals.

            

Freshwater pearl jewellery will add the finishing touch to any outfit or occasion.
