Pearl necklace is it fake or real or what?
A friend has loaned me a pearl necklace that belonged to her mother for me to wear as the something borrowed on my wedding day. She says they are real. I don’t really care as i’m not a material person and it is thought that counts and these obviously have a lot of personal value to her anyway, but I did notice that the surface is rubbing off on quite a few of the pearls, and so presumably this means they are just coated beads? I’m surprised my friend hasn’t noticed as it looked obvious to me. But seeing as I know squat about pearls maybe the surface rubs off real ones if they are worn a lot??? The clasp is real silver and they look pretty old so I just had my doubts and so wondered if anyone knows? I wouldn’t say anything anyway. They have a safety catch you see which stuck me as odd if they are just beads.
it might help if you post a picture.
they may be coated beads, just because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s real.
if anything, you can bring them to a jewelry or antique jewelry place and they’ll be able to tell you.
look on the internet as well, i think real pearls dissolve in a mixture of vinegar and something else, but there has to be a way to find out if they’re real without destroying them ;]
