Freshwater Pearls – Some Interesting Facts

About them

Freshwater pearls are generated by implanting a tiny mantle piece or some other tissue in the mussel. The nacre doesn’t have to be a perfectly round nucleus and therefore it is less likely to be a round one when harvested. Natural pearls are usually irregular in shape.
It is much easier to produce freshwater based pearls as each of the oyster can be implanted many times and has a capacity to produce about 30-40 pearls.

Though mostly white in color, freshwater pearls also come in rose, lavender, purples and pink colors too. As these colors are rare so they are expensive too! Actually these different colors occur due to the variety in mussel species, genetics, quality of water and actual position of pearl in a mussel shell. Naturally black colored pearls are valued highly due to their rarity as their output volume is very less. Today the black freshwater pearls in the market are mostly dyed in color unless stated otherwise. They are highly coveted since they were worn by Empress Eugenie of France in the middle of 19′th century.

Though freshwater and Akoya are both cultured pearls but they also differ in several aspects. Originally Akoya pearls were cultured in Japan and thus they got their Japanese name. Now with Chinese pearl culturing industry booming, Akoya pearls are mostly cultured in China. So what actually differentiates Akoyas from freshwater pearls? Firstly Akoya pearls are cultured in saltwater. Also Akoyas are normally spherical in shape than freshwater pearls which normally come in conical, oblong or many other irregular shapes. Akoyas are more delicate as they have thinner nacre than freshwater counterparts and therefore get worn out quicker. Akoyas also possess more luster than found in a freshwater pearl.

Pearls are very popular amongst the women and genuine pearls, as opposed to fake ones, usually attract good prices irrespective of their source of origin. In the countries, where pearls are not normally produced, prices can be somewhat higher as compared to those in China, United States or Japan.

As freshwater pearls are not perfectly round as seawater peals and also come in different shapes and colors, therefore they are more attractive to all those people who desire unique and unusual jewelry.
