Rare South
Why is it that most unusual/rare medical diseases are found in China/Asia?
I’m doing a report on medical conditions and have noticed that most of the unusual and rare conditions are found in Asia. Whether it Be China, Indonesia, Nepal, mostly those areas. I was wondering if there was a particular reason. I understand many cases are found in South America also and other places of the sort. I’m just wondering what it is about those countries that seem to ‘encourage’ these conditions.
What makes a disease or condition “unusual” or “rare” is that it is not commonly found within a given area. Even if many people within an area get a particular disease it will still be considered rare and unusual in a different area let alone a continent or two away.
For example, there is a disease called “Valley Fever” or “Desert Fever” in the South West of the United States. It comes from the byproducts of a fungus/bacteria that grows on the pod of the Palo Verde tree. It is believed that many who spend much time/grow up in the South West have had enough exposure to it that they are relatively not affected. Tourists and new comers to the area often end up pretty sick with it. Doctors in the South West know to look for it. Doctors outside the area consider it rare and unusual; although this has been changing over the past 30-40 years. But, you can be assured that a Chinese doctor, European doctor, Australian doctor, etc… would consider it all the more “rare” and “unusual”. The same/similar could probably he said about hepavirus, and even possibly about Lyme Disease.

The Rare Find $12.99 One of the nation’s biggest music labels briefly signed Taylor Swift to a contract but let her go because she didn’t seem worth more than $15,000 a year. At least four book publishers passed on the first Harry Potter novel rather than pay J. K. Rowling a $5,000 advance. And the same pattern happens in nearly every business. Anyone who recruits talent faces the same basic challenge, whether we work for a big company, a new start-up, a Hollywood studio, a hospital, or the Green Berets. We all wonder how to tell the really outstanding prospects from the ones who look great on paper but then fail on the job. Or, equally important, how to spot the ones who don’t look so good on paper but might still deliver extraordinary performance. Over the past few decades, technology has made recruiting in all fields vastly more sophisticated. Gut instincts have yielded to benchmarks. If we want elaborate dossiers on candidates, we can gather facts (and video) by the gigabyte. And yet the results are just as spotty as they were in the age of the rotary phone. George Anders sought out the world’s savviest talent judges to see what they do differently from the rest of us. He reveals how the U.S. Army finds soldiers with the character to be in Special Forces without asking them to fire a single bullet. He takes us to an elite basketball tournament in South Carolina, where the best scouts watch the game in a radically different way from the casual fan. He talks to researchers who are reinventing the process of hiring Fortune 500 CEOs. Drawing on the best advice of these and other talent masters, Anders reveals powerful ideas you can apply to your own hiring. For instance: Don’t ignore "the jagged résumé" -people whose background appears to teeter on the edge between success and failure. Such people can do spectacular work in the right settings, where their strengths dramatically outweigh their flaws. Look extra hard for "talent that whispers"- the obscure, out-of-the- way candidates who most scouting systems overlook. Be careful with "talent that shouts" -the spectacular but brash candidates who might have trouble with loyalty, motivation, and team spirit. Each field that Anders explores has its own lingo, customs, and history. But the specific stories fit together into a bigger mosaic. In any field, there’s an art to clearing away the clutter and focusing on what matters most. It’s not necessarily hard, but it requires the courage to take a different approach in pursuit of the rare find. |

South $3.95 When a little bird awakens to find that all of his friends and family have gone south for the winter, it takes a surprising friendship with Mooch the cat to help him find his way. This is a wordless and profoundly moving story–by the creator of the beloved comic strip Mutts–that explores being lost and found, crossing boundaries, saying goodbye, and broadening horizons. |

The South $5.23 In 1950 Katherine Proctor leaves Ireland for Barcelona, determined to escape her family and to become a painter. There she meets Miguel, an anarchist veteran of the Spanish Civil War, and proceeds to build a life with him. But Katherine cannot escape her past, as Michael Graves, a fellow Irish emigre in Spain, forces her to reexamine all her relationships: to her lover, her art, and the homeland she only thought she knew. The South is a novel of classic themes — of art and exile, and of the seemingly irreconcilable yearnings for love and freedom — to which Colm Toibin brings a new, passionate sensitivity. |

In A Rare Time Of Rain $11.19 Described in the Telegraph as ‘Huddersfield’s Melville’, Milner Place has spent much of his life sailing the seven seas as a skipper of a trading boat, while also writing beautifully crafted poetry. His two pamphlet collections. The CONFUSION OF ANGELS and WHERE SMOKE IS, has sold out and been reprinted, and this (at the age of sixty) is his first full length collection, Simon Armitage’s first acquisition for the Chatto Poetry list. Place’s poems have an international or universal quality, influenced by Neruda and Rilke rather than Auden: they are lyrical and wise, rather than quotidian and clever. Some of the poems are sea-going yarns, others are set in South America and read like Gabriel Garcia Marquez in verse. There are also a handful of characters portraits, and a wonderful long poem, ‘Lum Street’, based on a row of terraced houses, its tenants and their relationships to each other. IN A RARE TIME OF RAIN is a powerful and assured first collection, and brings an unusual new voice into British Poetry. |

South South $34.88 Captain Mackintosh and his party left the Aurora’ on the evening of January 25. They had nine dogs and one heavily loaded sledge, and started off briskly to the accompaniment of a cheer from their shipmates. The dogs were so eager for exercise after their prolonged confinement aboard the ship that they dashed forward at their best speed, and it was necessary for one man to sit upon the sledge in order to moderate the pace. Mackintosh had hoped to get to Hut Point that night, but luck was against him. |

Victory in Europe: Rare Photographs from Wartime Archives $19.44 Sixty years ago, the World had been at war for nearly six years. The cost in life and material terms was appalling Millions of men and women had died, families and nations destroyed and all sides were suffering grievously in human and financial terms. The Allies were closing in on Hitler’s Germany from the East, West and South. To historians today, the outcome was inevitable but for those living and fighting at the time nothing could be taken for granted. This book tells in true Images of War style the story of those final months of the Second World War. Unique photography and informed captions capture the Allied campaigns in NW Europe and Italy culminating in the celebration of victory both at home and in theater. |

In the South Seas $16.24 In the South Seas records Stevenson’s travels with his wife, Fanny, and their family in the Marquesas, the Paumotus, and the Gilbert Islands during 1888-89. Originally drafted in journal form while Stevenson traveled, it was then ambitiously rewritten to describe the islands and islanders as well as Stevenson’s own personal experiences. These revisions continued when Stevenson settled on the Samoan island where he died in 1894, and In the South Seas was published posthumously in 1896. Its combination of personal anecdote and historical account, of autobiography and anthropology, of Stevenson and South Sea Islands, makes this "a classic of Pacific travel, the work of the best British travel writer to see the South Seas" (Neil Rennie in her Introduction). |

South Wind $19.95 South Wind explores the pleasures of the hedonistic life. Set on the fictional island of Nepenthe (another depiction of Capri), South Wind tells the very loosely developed story of Thomas Heard, Bishop of Bambopo, during the season of the sirocco (south wind), which considerably affects the attitudes and behavior of the islanders. He encounters people holding various unorthodox views on moral and sexual questions, and Douglas develops the collision of opinions in "a series of Rabelaisian conversation pieces." |

South Orange $21.38 With more than two hundred vintage photographs, South Orange presents a distinctive view of a village that has evolved from a rural to a sophisticated landscape. Situated next to a two-thousand-five-hundred-acre forest preserve filled with wildlife, South Orange is just a half-hour drive from Manhattan. In the early 1800s, South Orange was popular for its reputation as a healthy, relaxing destination-an escape from the increasingly industrial big-city landscapes of the region. Today, this bedroom community presents a unique mix of cosmopolitan and suburban environments. South Orange follows the village through growth and development, illustrating how it has maintained much of its original character. The many extant homes in a wide variety of late-architectural styles hint at the summer afternoon tea parties of the nineteenth century. The gas-service lamps lining the streets of South Orange were once fueled by whale oil. The home of the Orange Lawn Tennis Club and Seton Hall University, South Orange was also the dwelling place of W.F. Havemeyer, real-estate tycoon, and Louis Bamberger, founder of Bamberger’s Department Store, now known as Macy’s. Another South Orange notable was William Frederick Allen, editor of the Official Railway Guide, who helped to implement the use of standard time in the United States. |
