What happens when you try and pawn a piece of jewelry?
I’ve been thinking of pawning a couple pieces of jewelry for a while now but I was wondering how exactly do they appraise your items. The items I have are 14k white gold and tanzinite (not sure on the spelling of that gemstone but it’s a lavender colored stone). Would I get full price back on them? 90%? 75%? How do I know if a pawn shop is legit or would it be better to go to a jeweler’s?
You would be better off at a jewelers if its real tanzanite. Generally the only stones a pawn shop will grade or give money on are diamonds. They have diamond testers at their shop, but they wont have a tester to tell them that’s a real tanzanite.
The gold is pretty easy. Gold was at $1,363 an ounce yesterday, heres the math on that. (current gold price) / (ounce) x (purity) = (spot price per gram) so that goes like this 1363 / 31.103 x .585 = $25.63 thats for 14k. Spot price is 100% of the melt down value, they would give anywhere between $15 to $18 a gram if your lucky.
Chances are your ring weighs less than 10 grams of gold and probably more like 5. Hard to say without seeing it.
