I picked up an abalone shell from Maui a few weeks ago and the tour guide said it was mother of pearl.?

How do I turn it into mother of pearl?

She said to soak it in bleach then use a nail file and file it…file the rough outside or the inside? how long do I soak it in bleach? Can someone give me specific instructions on how to do this?

The primary reason for bleaching is to completely disinfect the item so that there won’t be any risk of causing contamination. Overnight is more than ample.

A simpler method of processing, instead of a file is to use a grinder, be sure to wear a painter’s mask to be certain that you don’t inhale the calcium carbonate powder that will permeate the air. Along with that will be tiny particles of a glass like substance as there’s a silicon component in the shell.

The idea is to carefully grind off the back side of the shell so that you’re left with the nacre, the actual mother of pearl surface. It’s actually better to use proper lapidary tools but if you don’t have them, you may be able to use smaller tools like a Dremel rotary tool for cutting, shaping and polishing the ground surface. The actual shiny nacre is to be left along, it can’t really be improved.

Once you’ve cut, shaped and stylized the object, you may then either epoxy or fiberglass the back side to give it greater strength and then you’re ready to affix it, if you wish, to pendants, earrings, or whatever you’re attempting to create.

I did all of this as a teenager in Hawai’i and sold my work to vendors. Hardly made any money, the enjoyable part of it was in the many varieties of creations.
