Pressure Question! easy 10er?

Question:

Fresh and seawater are
flowing in parallel in horizontal
pipelines and are connected to each
other by a double U-tube manometer
below. The pressure difference
between the two pipelines is to be
determined. Take density of sea
water to be 1035 kg/m3

I really have no idea how to do this guys…PLEASE someone help! 10 points up for grabs!

Try that
I found another questoin with an indentical diagram and height values,

Hwater = 60cm
H(Hg) = 10cm
H(Air) = 70cm
H(S.Water) = 40cm

Does that help with getting A solution

Obviously the problem is not unsolvable, or it would not have been assigned to you. The water does not need a pump to flow as the second guy says, if it is gravity flow.

I cannot see the diagram though, every time I hit the link, it only takes me to photobucket’s home page.

Ok, now I see your second link to the diagram, but is that all you are given. How about any data about the different heights in your manometer?

Ok, the heights help.

Your answer should be something like

p1 – p2 = height of mercury * (specific gravity of mercury) – height of seawater * (specific gravity of seawater) + height of the air * (specific gravity of air) – height water * (specific weight of water)

But I am not sure that I have the pluses and minuses right.

The specific gravity is just the density flipped upside down. You will have to look up the density for fresh water and for mercury.
