What should i do for my turtle in winter?
I think my turtle is a box but i am not sure bacause i found it in the wild. Before you say it is not right to take them from the wild she has a messed up shell and i didnt find her she found me she crawled ontop of my foot!!!! and i have been feeding her crickets bugs weeds/other plants i can find in my yard but i dont know how much to feed her know she is stalking up for winter and were she i keep her while she is hibernating? please help anyth9ng is useful. even if it is just a small bit of information that doesnt pertain but it is about box turtles please tell me!

You can bring it indoors and feed it canned dog food during the winter. But you need to keep it warm, around 70-85 degrees, at all times, if you decide to keep it active during the winter. Turtles can not digest their food unless their body is warm, and since they do not generate heat internally, they need warm surroundings to stay warm. One way to keep it warm is to keep it in a plastic box with at least sides that are at least 6-8″ tall to keep it from escaping. Keep it in a room free of drafts, and keep a heat tape under the box. Many reptile shops sell heat tapes to warm snake, lizard and turtle cages.
You can also keep it in a plastic box for hibernation. If you don’t want to feed it during the winter, you can keep the turtle in the box, put a cover on it, but drill or puncture a few holes into the top or sides of the plastic box to keep it ventilated. The lid will keep the humidity reaonably high. You can then keep the box in an unheated room or a garage, but make sure that temperature never goes below freezing. You can also put some wet moss in the box to help keep the humidity high and wet the moss peridoically to keep the turtle from drying out. Give it some water periodically. It will drink, but it would not have any appetite for food. You can bring it out of hibernation at any time but make sure it is warm enough before feeding it. Some calcium supplement and vitamin D may be needed to help it grow its shell properly when feeing it.
