A Silver Jewelry History of Necklaces

The HIstory of Silver Jewelry Necklaces
Who knew that Sally’s sold her seashells for the creation of the first necklace? Speculation surrounds the true origin of necklaces. Archeologists believe this history began in the Stone Age, some 75,000 years ago, with the discovery of a beautifully crafted mollusk necklace. Mollusks are a group of quiet invertebrates, which include snails, slugs, mussels, octopus and many more. This earliest known necklace was found inside a South African cave. It took a total of forty-one mollusk shells to construct this jewelry.

As the years pass, beads are introduced into the design of necklaces, as they are placed and worn on strings. The advancement of this jewelry grows as artisans form necklaces from gold, silver, terra cotta, and clay.
We can thank the sleek Ancient Egyptians for breaking the mold of the basic string necklace, as they are known for designing turquoise jewelry pieces and their Usekh collar necklace. Most of their necklaces were crafted by a goldsmith, and were worn to display their social status. They are infamously known for their portrayal of pectoral and broad collar necklaces for both men and women, as the excavation of many tombs unveiled these jewelry pieces. This jewelry was generally owned and worn by the wealthy and royal Egyptians.
