Characteristics of Pearls
Pearls have been valued for their unique qualities for centuries. Pearls were the first gemstone discovered by man, and have long been a symbol of purity and love.
Pearls are inherently different from other gemstones. They are organic gems formed inside mollusks. This makes pearls the only gems created by a living organism. While other gemstones need to be cut and polished, pearls are perfect from the moment they emerge from the shell. Natural pearls consist of layers of nacre secreted by the mollusk. Light reflecting from the overlapping layers that make up the nacre of a genuine pearl has a characteristic iridescent luster.
Pearls come in a variety of natural colors. The color of a pearl tends to match the inside of the mollusk’s shell. Thus the Black-lipped Pearl Oyster creates black pearls. The Gold-lipped Pearl Oyster creates gold-colored pearls, etc. Colors of pearls range from white to pink, brown and black. There are also different types of pearls, such as Freshwater, Tahitian, South Sea and Akoya pearls. Each pearl type has its own qualities and characteristics.
