Many native American tribes run casinos now. Was gambling part of their culture(s) before white men arrived?
Allowing native Americans to run casinos is an indirect way to allow them to collect reparations, right? For all the mistreatment their ancestors had to endure, and the destruction of their way of life on the North American continent, by the white people? Is there possibly a better way to pay reparations? Or did native Americans always approve of gambling (with furs, jewelry, land, women….whatever) before Europeans suddenly turned their world upside down in the 17th century?
now that the mms have answered…..
first of all most tribes do not have casinos. of those that do, only a handful are profitable enough to change the lifestyle of its members. casinos are the result of president reagan signing a law allowing native nations to have gambling on sovereign lands even if those lands are within states that do not allow gambling. today tribal gaming accounts for only 5% of all gaming in the usa.
ostensibly, this was to allow native people to make money to pay for tribal services like medical, fire, police, schools etc. the reality is, the laws are actually there to allow casino coporations like harrahs and balleys etc, to use the loophole to set up gambling operations in non gambling states.
tribes must also make pacts with the states they are located in. usually this amounts to very large sums of money being collected from the tribe every year. connecticut with its 2 tribal casinos collected over $430 million in 2007 alone. NO OTHER businesses are required to share % of profits with the states they are in and no other businesses pays taxes that high.
the casino corporation that front the operations also make money from them off the top. contrary to popular beliefs, native nations are not “given” casinos. they must pay for them which means borrowing money from these large casinos in las vegas and atlantic city. their money does not come cheap.
after all is said and done, the tribes themselves are lucky to get even 15% of all profits. for tribes who have casinos in sparsely populated areas, there is hardly enough money left at all.
these are NOT reparations. native people have never asked for reparation and have never received reparations. this was and is still a way for major corporations and governments to use native people as revenue makers for the states. why else would new york state shut down a profitable mail order tobacco business run by senecas and mohawks but salivate at the idea of a newly federally recognized nation, the shinnecoks, intent to build a casino on long island? this is NOT about native people making money to better themselves. its about greedy states essentially putting native people in service to the states for generations to come. this is why some native nations refuse to build casinos. we refuse to sell our children and their children to the state.
and to answer the other part of your question. games of chance were popular but not in the way you are thinking. and dude…women have always been held in high eseem within our cultures. we do not gamble for women. and to the mms who answered before me…grow up and stop projecting YOUR culture on ours.
