What is your opinion on the 2008 Olympic medal?

The medal is part gold and part jade. I don’t like it; I think that all medals should be entirely made of gold, silver or bronze. To me, it cheapens the look of the medal.

Yes, I know jade has value and symbolizes many things in many cultures, but I am old school–a fogie! Sorry, I just can’t “think outside the box”, as one poster put it. When I saw the medal, I just did not like the way it looked.

Do not be upset. The gold medal has not been solid gold for many years. It is by regulation made of silver, with “at least” 6 grams of gold plating added. So in 2008, the jade actually replaces silver, the 6 grams of gold is still added. The 6 grams of gold are worth about $165 at current spot value. As I understand it, they made 800 or so gold medals, so they needed 4.8 kilograms of gold just to put the 6 grams on each gold metal.
