Know More About Akoya Pearl Necklace
Akoya pearl necklaces are classic strands and are known the world over. The akoya pearls are usually perfectly round and lustrous. These pearls are only found in the seas rather than freshwater lakes. Usually cultured in Japan, these classic high-end pearls are quite common where ever quality jewelry is sold. Beautifully lustrous and perfectly matched pearl strands of akoya are some of the best necklaces around.
Pinctata Fucata is the name of this small bivalve mollusk that produces these sea jewels. These pearls are also found in other parts of the world but are more common in Japanese waters. Aloha Pearls carries quite a selection of akoya necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings to choose from. Given the small size of akoya oysters, it isn’t surprising that the cultured pearls they produce also tend to be relatively small. Akoya cultured pearls rang from 2 mm to 11 mm in diameter. (A 10 mm akoya is uncommon, and an 11 mm akoya is rare.) Most akoya pearls are marketed as strands. Most akoya cultured pearl strands are very well matched. Well-matched akoya cultured pearls have traditionally defined the phrase “strand of pearls”.
The value of akoya pearls goes up as the size of the pearls increase. Some akoya sizes are in high demand but the supply in relatively low. There is a fairly large rise in value between 7.5 mm and 8.0 mm akoya pearls, and between 10.0 mm to 10.5 mm akoyas, even though there is only a .5 mm difference in size.
Although akoya pearls are usually white, they also come in dark green or blue green colors. These emerald colored pearls are usually 7.5 mm in size and make gorgeous necklace strands and earrings. We have beautiful golden Akoya necklaces that are remarkably similar to the South Sea golden pearls with its thick nacre, beautiful luster and round shapes. This necklace has a very subtle graduation in size using 6mm to 6.5mm pearls. Akoya cultured pearls are almost always round or near round, but akoya harvests sometimes contain semi-baroque and baroque shapes.
