When people think of pearls most people think freshwater pearls in pearl jewelry. The most likely reason for this popularity is because there is so much freshwater pearl jewelry on the market because of the excellent price point available for this type of pearl jewelry. Another reason for the immense popularity of freshwater pear jewelry is because of the wide variety of colors available for pearl jewelry design with this type of pearl. It doesn’t matter what part of the country you may live in freshwater pearl jewelry’s popularity can be seen in most jewelry stores. The soft pink pearls and more metallic lavender pearls in the genre of freshwater pearls are one of the most popular natural colors. Of course there are enhanced greens, browns, purples, yellows and all types of freshwater pearl jewelry on the market. Also, oysters with a freshwater pearl inside are a popular gift idea in Hawaii.
People take the oysters and pop them open to find a beautiful and lustrous pearl inside of it. Then the customer usually decides to set the ring into a pendant or a ring setting for the pearl. It takes a lot of pearls to make a necklace. For example on a 7.5mm pearl necklace there is usually 45 to 55 pearls per necklace. Freshwater pearl necklace come in a variety of sizes but the most common size is 5 to 8mm. Larger sizes are available but the cost does go up with the size as well. One of the bigger necklaces in freshwater pearl that I’ve seen is a white 13-17mm near round freshwater necklace that looks very close to what a white south sea necklace looks like. Even some jewelry stores that I’ve gone to could not tell the difference if the pearls were white south sea or freshwater. This size of pearl is just not seen that often. For a necklace of this size most people think $20,000 plus but with freshwater pearls it can be had a much less price of around $2,000 to $5000 depending on quality and surface blemishing. The surface quality is difficult to maintain with this size of pearl on the freshwater pearl. It starts to have a little bit of a scratch surface that is difficult to describe other than it is not the mirror like finish that one expects out of pearls. It more of a pearly shell like luster that a pearl would look like if not at a high polish.
