From trees in the genus Eucalyptus we get an extraordinary variety of materials useful to floral designers. Foliage from the same tree may vary with the tree’s maturity, from round and flat to long and willowy. Among the familiar types are horizontal, stem-clasping leaves of ‘Baby Blue’, the immature flower buds of “seeded” eucalyptus, and the textured pods of ‘Silverbell’. Native to Austrailia, eucalyptus species are generally gray or blue-green and often bear a distinctive fragrance of peppermint or menthol.

‘Baby Blue’ eucalyptus

The asymmetrically balanced design features groupings of blues. The tall agapanthus blooms at the top and to the right of the vertical axis are counter-balanced by a large hydrangea cluster at the base on the left. A vertical cluster of eryngium anchors the hydrangea and bleeds into a small radial cluster of ‘Baby Blue’ eucalyptus on the right. A larger cluster of eucalyptus on the left flows diagonally upwards, with an accent cluster of ‘Silverbell’ sprays at the base. The front-to-back curvilinear flow of split flax visually cuts over the focal emphasis area.

Cubistic Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus foliage is so sturdy it can be cut into squares; the gray-green color makes it stand out in relief against a dark green background. Here, a ceramic container was foamed high, so that the foam extends about six inches above the container rim. Screens of equisetum were constructed by piercing the stems horizontally with #18-guage wires; then the screens were attached to the container so that they also cover most of the foam. The flowers (mini-callas, roses, carnations and sedum) are woven through the equisetum. The squares of eucalyptus foliage are attached to the equisetum fence with straight pins, making a rhythmic pattern across the designed surface.

Eucalyptus accents

A basing of grouped carnations, roses and sedum provides the surface from which mini callas and split flax emerge in a flowing linear fashion. The mini-callas extend outward in both directions, while the split flax are positioned to lead the eye outward and inward, encompassing the total design. Clusters of seeded eucalyptus and ‘Silverbell’ pods add the textual accent to the groupings of base flowers.
