Origins of South Indian Temple Jewellery Unveiled by Kolkata Jeweler
In art of jewellery making India has a long tradition that harks back few centuries when along with architecture, painting, literature it too was regarded as a fine art and enjoyed royal patronage, explains Indian fine jewellery experts. Traditional Indian jewellery craft like Kundan, Meenakari, Polki, Thewa, and Temple Jewellery of South – all have a rich and colourful history worth investigating to understand the influences of the past in modern Indian bridal jewellery trends.
Indians after all have always been committed towards upholding rich heritage of our great land close to their hearts especially when it comes to weddings which continue to be elaborately ritualistic and traditional. Hence, bridal jewellery trends in India too draw heavily upon traditional arts with which western contemporary styles are melded to create unique designs.
Today, we take a closer look at the origins of South Indian temple jewellery which was originally used to decorate deities and also worn by Devdasis who danced in front of the gods in South Indian temples, hence the name temple jewellery. Today, temple jewellery forms an integral part of the Tamil wedding where the bride is decked up in gold from head to tow.
Despite influences of western styles the charm and elegance of traditional temple jewellery remains a favourite of Tamil brides who prefer heirloom pieces even over contemporary styles. Let us take a closer look at some of the important ornaments popular in the South.
• Nethi Chutti is a decorative head ornament comprising of small round ornament or Chutti studded with precious stones with pearls hanging and a decorative strap worn on central parting of the hair that supports the Chutti. The Chutti is again connected to two other straps that run on either sides of the forehead.
• Other head ornaments include Suryan and Chandram shaped like sun and moon respectively that is worn on either sides of the hair.
• Raakadai is another piece of smaller gold round shaped ornaments placed used to adorn the back of the head of South Indian brides.
• Jitniki is another ear ornament, bell shaped and set in coloured jewels and pearls it hangs from a lotus shaped “Kammal” of diamonds or rubies. Other ear ornaments include Maattal, a strap studded with gemstones connected to the Jitniki and pulled to the top of the ear to be pinned to the hair with hairpins and Thodu, small studs.
• Necklaces include Adijjai or choker, Maangaamaala, a long heavy chain with mango shape pendant that is set with precious jewels usually rubies, Thali or Matigalasuthra, perceived to be a symbol of constancy of love in marriage and Kaasumalai, which is a delicate chain of gold coins.
In south Indian jewellery floral motifs, glittering stars, swans and lotus are eternal favourites since time immemorial. While contemporary styles have influenced and brought some changes in designs these motifs still remain very much in vogue.
