Are CULTURED PEARLS taken from oysters raised in captivity and then slaughtered??? I really want a ………
Pearl necklace that I saw, but shouldn’t I buy ‘FREE RANGE PEARLS’???
You know, pearls from oysters that were allowed to live free, carefree lives roamin’ the uncharted depths till dying a natural death……………………
Oysters, whether cultivated or wild do nothing more than sit on a rock.
Cultured oysters are grown on large man-made structures. A tiny piece of grit is introduced into the shell and the oyster forms a cultured pearl around it. Natural pearls come from grit that accidentally gets into the shell. Because this occurs less frequently, natural pearls are much rarer. You have to kill thousands of wild oysters to find a good one.
So, if you are going to get ethical about mollusks, then cultured pearls are far more humane. Far fewer oysters are killed to create your pearl necklace, and wild oysters are not endangered by over-harvesting.
