An explanation for this process?
One day I found out taht if you put marble chips and seashells in vinegar, crystals will grow. As far as I know, it is because they both contain calcium. Can someone please explain in more detail what is actually happening and why this happens? Why is it that when I put marble chips and seashells in vinegar, I get crystals. What kind of crystals are they, and how do I make them more durable? Does the vinegar evaporate(the vinegar always just disappears, and always at wherever the top of the vinegar is, there are crystals)
Crystalline solids (like calcium and many other minerals) are crystalline because their atoms produce particular structures when they bind to each other. As more calcium atoms bond onto the structure, it maintains its shape because of the atomic structure of calcium. And because they’re so compatible, calcium atoms really like to bond to other calcium atoms, hence the crystal grows because the calcium dissolved in the vinegar solution bonds onto the existing crystal structures.
Sorry, I don’t know how to make the crystals more durable. But I can tell you that vinegar does indeed evaporate over time! It wouldn’t be incorporated into the crystals or anything because the molecules of vinegar aren’t compatible with the calcium crystal structure.
