what is different about an ocean going ship?
What is the difference in structure between an ocean going ship then a freshwater ship? also, do they have to be a certain size to cross the ocean? -thanks
If we are talking ‘ships’ as opposed to boats, then the structural design of the hull will dictate the operational area that the vessel is designed to operate in. The adequacy of a structure can only be realistically determined if it is assessed with sound knowledge of the loads that are likely to be applied to that structure.
Traditionally still water loads and wave bending loads were calculated using the Static-Balance method (balance ship on a wave using correct weight distribution for ship (downward forces) and wave buoyancy (upward forces).
Strip Theory methods to determine the probable and design extreme amplitude shear force or bending for a particular sea state and CFD are more common methods. These have the advantage of predicting long term loads on the hull.
As can be appreciated- the greater the forces of the environment (waves, etc) that the ship will encounter, the greater the strength required of the structure to withstand these forces.
This differs somewhat for yachts as the weight of the yacht balanced on a wave does not give rise to the same stresses as found on a ship. Yachts are relatively light with a reasonable straightforward weight distribution. Ships on the other hand have cargo holds which may or may not be filled with cargo. This can give rise to some interesting bending moment diagrams. These factors all influence the design of hull structure.
With respect to hull resistance – Naval architects will endeavour to get a hull form offering the least resistance whilst having good sea-keeping capabilities (generally can’t achieve both as an optimum). Reason is lower resistance of hull better speed and fuel economy.
Vessels of all size and shape can cross the ocean. Generally vessel are classified for an area, e.g. harbour, coastal, ocean going, etc. However, it is not unusual for a harbour tug to be sailed across the ocean when she is sold to a new buyer.
Vessels going to sea need to meet minimum criteria – and it is this criteria generally set by the country in which she is registered in which will allow her to leave or not leave port. In this respect, the Stability Book is an important document, as it gives an indication of the ships static and dynamic stability (i.e. when encountering wind and waves)
