I have several kinds. Are the ones that are light green and sort of see-through bad? Are the more colourful brighter ones better?

No, the light green and translucent variety you mention is a form of jadeite, and it is the most prized variety. The brighter ones are more decorative, but prized less highly.

However, jadeite is still a rare stone, so it will pretty much always be prized.
