A lobster clasp, also known as a lobster hook, is a fastener that is held closed b a spring. Lobster clasps are opened or closed by holding a small lever, usually with a fingernail, long enough to apply, then they are attached ( or removed from ) a short link-chain or a ring-like structure. They are often used for necklaces, bracelets and key chains.
The lobster clasps are perhaps the most commonly used fastener for jewelry because it locks well. They also works well for adjustable necklace and bracelet that have a chain of several small rings attached to one end, because the lobster clasp can attach to any of the rings, allowing the necklace and bracelet to be worn either shorter or longer. Those lobster clasps come in various shapes and sizes to work with different styles and jewelry weights. They get their name because they resemble the large pincher of a lobster. Lobster clasps have different types. The standard lobster clasp has a round ring attached to the end of jewelry. It has a hollow metal section that contains the spring between the small jewelry end ring and the larger round clasp section. They come in a variety of sizes ranging from5mmto more than15mmin length.
From the standard lobster clasps, many variations are made to customize the clasp to fit the style of the jewelry. The design may adjust the clasp itself or the attachment chain or both. You may find a clasp in heart shape, and many clasps may be designed or caved with special patterns.
Lobster clasps can be made of gold, silver, alloy, brass, stainless steel, Iron and some other materials. For fashion jewelry, expensive materials are not used commonly. Stainless steel clasps are popular for surfer looks, gothic creations and masculine items. This is a strong metal. But tends to dull easily wear. Lobster clasps also come in different colors, including platinum, antique silver, antique golden, red copper, antique bronze, silver, golden and etc.
Lobster clasps can be purchased at bead and craft stores, but more of them are made of sterling silver or in silver color.
