Which filter is the better choice?

I am about to start a new aquarium. I had a 30 gallon freshwater tank a while back, and I used an undergravel filter in it and it worked like a charm. Lately, however, I have heard some negative things about undergravel filters, and that the external filters are much better. What do you think?

Anyway, most people have gotten away from using the undergravel filters due to the way they trap all the debris down in the gravel and under the filter plates where it just continues to decay and produce ammonia.

I personally use hang on the back filters (HOB) and air powered plastic box filters for all my tanks. I have one air pump that runs the box filters for 19 of my 25 tanks. Some have more than one box filter. The other 6 have HOB’s.

It is quite simple to reach in, remove the plastic box to the sink and replace the filter media. I can do all 19 tanks in about an hour. Of course I have spares that I get ready before I start and only have to switch them with the dirty ones.

I use 100% polyester pillow stuffing for the media that traps the debris. Costs about $4 for a bag the size of a large bed pillow.

The power filters (HOB) are good for the bigger tanks like 30′s to 50′s. Or you could put a box filter in each end. If it is a “show” tank, you would probably want to use the HOB type so it is not seen inside the tank, only the intake tube is visible.

None of my tanks are “show tanks,” they are all breeders or rearing tanks. I raise and sell a lot of fish at auctions held in my area by the 6 local fish clubs.
