Does “green onyx” exist?

I have seen a lot of jewellery and gemstone sites that refer to green onyx, however a gemologist told me there is no such thing (onyx has to be banded and is usually black/white). So, what would this “green onyx” be? Just a green agate?

So Faesson, would you suggest the gem in the link is a green banded agate?

Some websites say onyx is a type of chalcedony, others a type of quartz and others a type of agate. I am truly truly confused.

Depends on your point of view.

“Onyx” is a particularly poor choice for jewelry. It is a soft stone, usually banded, as the man said, in black and white…. shiny, but you can scratch it with a penny.

Agates are much harder and for some reason (I will explain it if I must), some have been referred to as “onyx”. For example, “Black Onyx” isn’t onyx, it is an agate…. usually grey to begin with it is treated to give it the “black” color.

Green agates are plentiful, so it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see someone call it “Green Onyx”.
