Beautiful Akoya Pearl Jewelry
Akoya pearls are salt-water pearls, highly prized for their perfectly round shapes, which are valued in the pearl industry. Akoyas were the first spherical cultured pearls.
Pinctada Fucata is the name of the species and they have always been abundant in Japanese ocean waters. These oysters are smaller than other pearl oysters. When fully grown these oysters measure about 3 to 5 inches in diameter. Their pearls are usually white or creme colored. Highly lustrous, hard and perfectly round pearls are common characteristics of this type.
These akoya pearls range in sizes from 2mm to 9mm. Unlike some larger species, akoya oysters can accept multiple nuclei, which is a bead made from the shells of freshwater mollusks. These beads form the central core of the cultured pearl. The akoya oyster can hold as many as five bead nuclei at a time. The growth period for the Japanese akoya, cultured pearl is eight months to two years. When harvested, these lovely sea pearls make breathtaking strands of the highest quality.
Akoya Pearls are strikingly brilliant and these pearls reflect a rich orient that sets it apart from other pearls. These artistically graduated pearls ranging from 6.5mm to 7.0mm are stunning and affordable. Golden akoya pearls make heads turn.
Another great feature about akoya pearls is that they are easy to match for strands. These pearls are very consistent in shape and size, very round and brilliantly lustrous. White akoya stud earrings are common in most pearl stores along with classical white necklace strands.
You will find akoya cultured pearls in a variety of jewelry items: multi-strand bracelets, pendants, single and cluster rings; stud, drop, and cluster earrings; brooches, cufflinks, and tie tacks. Most cultured akoya pearls are strung into necklaces.
As long as there is a demand for traditional and affordable necklaces strung with medium-size uniform cultured pearls, the cultured akoya pearl will remain a crucial par of the jewelry scene. Since 1996, the Japanese akoya industry has expanded their quantity and quality of these pearls and there is still a demand for quality akoya cultured pearls in the world market today.
