Factors that Affect Pearl Quality
Pearl necklaces could be quite expensive so it’s really considered as an investment. Always buy something that is of high quality, thus could withstand time.
There are two rating systems for pearls.
In the AAA-A system, AAA is the best, AA is the middle, and A is the lowest grade.
The Tahitian system, on the other hand, rates pearls A, B, C and D with A being the highest quality and D being the lowest.
Both of these systems will use the same criteria for grading a pearl, with ratings based on luster, thickness, blemishes and shape.
Nacre is the substance that forms around the foreign body when a pearl is cultured. It’s the deposit that gives the pearl its iridescent property. The amount of its thickness determines how long it will last. The nacre’s ideal thickness is approximately 0.35- 0.5 mm.
Luster is the glow that the pearl emits bouncing back to the eye from the coating or nacre. The higher the luster, the more valuable the pearl is.
Color is also a vital and obviously visible way judging a pearl’s value. Experts say darker pearls are more expensive than lighter colored ones. The most common colors for pearl necklaces are white and cream because it suits suit all types of women whether she be Asian, African or American. However, pearls come in many other colors as well. Some of the common colors for pearls other than white and cream are black, brown, pink, bronze, gold, silver and grey. Ask the seller whether the color is natural or dyed; the latter should be less expensive.
Shape will depend on the type of pearl that you choose, but typically a perfectly round pearl is the highest grade because these are rarely formed. Pearls can be found in a variety of shapes including baroque, round, button, stick, and semi round.
Matching is obviously important when determining the quality of a whole strand. Perfectly matched pearls in color and size are more valuable than poorly matched pearls. A well matching pearl necklace will price double or even triple than those not-so-matching necklace. This is because it takes time to find right pearls set beside each of them.
Surface quality pertains to the flawless characteristic of a pearl. The lesser the imperfections, the higher is its value. Pearls should be carefully examined against a dark background for the presence of blemishes on their surface.
When it comes to size, the larger the pearl, the rarer and more valuable it is. The classic size is 7 millimeters.
Consider buying a graduated strand of pearls with the largest in the center and then getting progressively smaller toward the clasp.
