Qualities To Look For When Purchasing Pearl Jewelry
Pearls are perfect as created by nature. They are lustrous and radiant from the moment they emerge from the mollusk where they are created. Genuine pearls are among the most valuable and sought-after gems in the world. How do you know the gemstone you are purchasing is a genuine, high-quality pearl? Here are some characteristics to look for when purchasing pearls.
The most valuable pearls are relatively large, naturally produced, and symmetrical with good luster. Size is of utmost importance in determining pearl value. Pearls are measured in millimeters. The number indicates the diameter of the pearl. Generally a 6mm pearl is considered relatively small. 6-7.5mm is an average size. 7-7.5mm is considered a desirable size. 8mm pearls are the most outstanding gems.
You also have to consider the different types of pearls, as their average sizes vary. An 8mm Akoya saltwater pearl is considered very large. However, South Sea pearls are larger in size. Their average size is 13-15mm. An 8mm South Sea pearl would be considered relatively small. Some rare South Sea pearls are 16 mm.
The other value factor to consider is the luster of the pearl. Natural pearls consist of layers of nacre secreted by the mollusk that produced them. Light reflecting from the overlapping layers that make up the nacre produce the pearl’s luster. The thicker the nacre, the better the luster. When buying pearls, examine the quantity and quality of light reflecting from the pearl’s surface. Pearls that have the desired thickness of nacre will have a bright surface that clearly reflects nearby objects. Pearls with dull surfaces have low-quality nacre. You need to also look for consistency on the surface of the pearl. The luster (and nacre) should be uniform on the entire surface. Roll the pearls to examine them from all sides, avoiding strong, direct light.
Keep in mind that quality pearls with excellent luster and nacre can look different depending on the type of pearl they are. South Sea pearls have a soft glow, while Japanese Akoya pearls display an intense brightness. The difference is due to the temperature of the waters where Akoya pearls are produced. Cold water causes the nacre to develop more slowly.
